Theatre on the Square is a theatre venue in Sandton, Johannesburg (Corner Sandton Drive and Rivonia Road).
The full name of the theatre was originally based on the sponsors name at the particular time. So it has been called the Old Mutual Theatre on the Square, Auto & General Theatre on the Square, Liberty Theatre on the Square and Agfa Theatre on the Square, as the sponsors changed.
History
Founded in 1994 by Daphne Kuhn in Rosebank, Johannesburg. In 1996/1997, the theatre relocated to Nelson Mandela Square (formerly Sandton Square) in upmarket Sandton in the Northern suburbs. It is a 200-seater theatre.
Since its opening, Theatre on the Square has produced and presented more than 3000 plays, concerts, corporate events, musicals, lunch hour and children's theatre, industrial theatre and a regular youth theatre training programme in the performing arts.
