De Kat ("The cat") is an arts, culture and lifestyle magazine (1985-).

The publication

Originally founded in 1985 as a glossy lifestyle magazine by the arts journalist Johan van Rooyen, it was initially published in Afrikaans only, but has been available in an English version since 2006.

The website summarises the content of the magazine as follows: it offers articles on art, design, photography, books, motoring, food, wine, creativity, intellectual issues, inspirational matters, the avant garde, the bohemian, restaurants and entertainment.

Initially owned by Penta Publications, later by Nothemba Media and eventually by Elzilda Becker and African Sky Media

A spin-off has been the prime-time tv-show DEKATv (aired on SABC2).
