Johan van Rooyen (19*-2004) theatre director, journalist, theatre reviewer, arts editor.

Biography

He died in March 2004 in a hospital in Pretoria.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

He was one-time editor of the educational journal Lantern (later known as Vuka!) and editor of Habitat Magazine South Africa[1]. In the 1980s he became an influential arts editor of the Pretoria Newsand in 1985 founded and was the first editor of the arts and lifestyle journal De Kat.

His direct involvement in theatre apparently included the founding of PATSO (a student organisation for performing artists) in 1980, an association that would eventually become an independent production company, then known as PATO (the Performing Artists Theatre Organisation).
