He was married to Maria Magdalena Gerber (1876–1973).

He wrote and brioadcast a wide range of articles and reviews on Afrikaans literature over the years in journals like Standpunte, Theoria and Die Huisgenoot. Omonh them there is trenchant though negative review of the first full translation of Hamlet into Afrikaans " Hamlet in Afrikaans", Standpunte Jaargang 2 No. 1 1945: pp. 50-59).

A selection of his writings and broadcastas are contianed in Verkennings (Human & Rousseau, 1962).
