The original text
The play was inspired by Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude and was created by John Wright with Paul Hunter and Hayley Carmichael of Middlesex University. First produced at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1993 and was subsequently also hosted by the London International Mime Festival.
It received a nomination for the Independent Theatre Award and the three creators would later become the founders of the company Told by an Idiot.

Performance history in South Africa
1995: On the Verge of Exploding was performed at the Edinburg Festival, the Grahamstown Festival and Upstairs at the Market, featuring with Hayley Carmichael and Paul Hunter.
