On the Verge of Exploding is a British play developed in by John Wright, Paul Hunter and Hayley Carmichael.

The original text
The piece was inspired by Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel One Hundred Years of Solitude and was created by John Wright and his two former students Paul Hunter and Hayley Carmichael of Middlesex University as the first production of the company Told by an Idiot[1], which they had founded in 1993. It was first produced by the company at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1993, receiving a nomination for the Independent Theatre Award and followed by a run at the London International Mime Festival.

Performance history in South Africa
1995: On the Verge of Exploding was brought to South Africa to perform at the Grahamstown Festival and Upstairs at the Market, featuring Hayley Carmichael and Paul Hunter. The company was referred to as the John Wright Company in the local press.
