Willem Steenkamp a South African novelist, playwright, journalist, historian and military analyst

Biography

Born in Cape Town on 2 May 1940, he has written numerous books and articles on military matters, as well as novels and fictional stories based on his military background. Among them have been Moedverloor (1980), Sê vir Leonardo (1980), Namakwalandse Oustories (1983, a re-telling, in Afrikaans, of traditional Namaqualand folk-tales), The Horse Thief (1985, winner of 1985 Lady Usher Memorial Prize), Blake's Woman (1986) and The Blockhouse (1987, co-winner of Maskew Miller Prize)

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

In 1986 he and Tony Robinson adapted his novel The Horse Thief for the stage. It was performed by CAPAB in the same year.
