Ubuntu – The Opera is an opera in two acts and a prologue by Juan Burgers.

The opera focuses on the key events in the years of struggle against apartheid, with Nelson Rolihlaha Mandela and Winnie Madikizela Mandela as the kingpins in its often dramatic unfolding.The opera moves from Nelson Mandela’s birth in the rural Transkei through the years until he is eventually released from prison and gives his inaugural presidential address at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

Productions

2015: Presented under the auspices of Esayidi FET College in collaboration with Bravo Africa Entertainment at the Playhouse Opera in Durban. Directed, designed and choreographed by David Krugel. With Charlotte Mhlongo (Gaia), Simphiwe Mkhatshwa/Thamsanqa Mqaba (Ubuntu), Njabulo Mthimkhulu (Nelson Mandela), Khumbuzile Dlamini/Nomsa Mpofu (Winnie Mandela),Thamsanqa Khaba (Albert Luthuli). KZN Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Lykele Temmingh.
