The Green Knight was an English verse play by H.W.D. Manson (1926-1969).

The original text

The play uses the the plot of the Middle English poem, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, giving the poem a significant twist for its own purposes.

First performed by the English Department of the University of Natal (Pietermaritzburg) in 1955. In 1956 three acts of the play (plus synopses of the rest by Christina van Heyningen) were published in Standpunte (11(1):12-34, Aug-Sept). The full text eventually published by Human & Rousseau, in 1969.
