The Goose with the Golden Eggs is a farce in one act by Augustus Mayhew (1826-1875) and Henry Sutherland Edwards (1828-1906).

First performed at The Strand Theatre, London, on 1 September, 1859.

Published in London by Thomas Hailes Lacy as Lacy's acting edition no 654 and by Samuel French in 1859 and in Chicago by the Dramatic Publishing Company

Performance history in South Africa

1862: According to Bosman, 1980, it was probably the play performed in the Theatre Royal, Cape Town, as The Goose that laid the Golden Eggs by the Sefton Parry company on 2 April, as part of a benefit for Samuel Wolfe. It accompanied a play billed/listed(?) as The Creole, or Love Letters (Brookes).

1863: Performed as The Goose with the Golden Eggs in the newly refurbished Garrison Theatre, Cape Town, on 28 and 29 December, along with "a Grand Christmas Pantomime" called King Alfred the Great, or The Magic Banjo and the Mystic Raven.

1876: Performed as The Goose with the Golden Eggs by Disney Roebuck and his company in the Athenaeum Hall, Cape Town, on 13 July, with The Merchant of Venice (Shakespeare).

1877: Performed as The Goose with the Golden Eggs by Disney Roebuck and his company in the Theatre Royal, Cape Town, on 8 August, with East Lynne (Wood).

1878: Performed as The Goose with the Golden Eggs by Disney Roebuck and his company in the Good Hope Gardens, Cape Town, as part of a "Grand Gala Night" on 23 January, with East Lynne (Wood).

1878: Performed as The Goose with the Golden Eggs by Disney Roebuck and his company in the Theatre Royal, Cape Town, on 26, 28 and 29 January, with The Flying Scud, or A Four-legged Fortune (Boucicault).
