The Earl and the Girl is a musical comedy in two acts by Seymour Hicks (1871-1949) [1], Percy Greenbank and Ivan Caryll.

The original text
The work had a book by Seymour Hicks, lyrics by Percy Greenbank (1878-1968)[2] and music by Ivan Caryll (1861-1921)[3] and was first performed at the Adelphi Theatre, London, on 10 December 1903, transferring to the Lyric Theatre on 12 September 1904. In New York it opened at the Casino Theatre on 4 November 1905 (and had added music and lyrics by Jerome Kern and others).

Performance history in South Africa
1904: Performed in the Opera House, Cape Town, in July, by the Sass-Nelson Musical Comedy Company.
1905: Performed one more in the Opera House, Cape Town, February, by the Sass-Nelson Musical Comedy Company, featuring William Cromwell and Chrissie Leonard.
