Rooiland ("red land") is a play Tertius Kapp (1979-).

Not to be confused with the novel "Rooiland" by D.F. Malherbe (1956).

The original text

A play is about initiation rituals among prison gangs in South African jails. The language is a mixture of Afrikaans, street language and prison language.

The play won the Aardklop-Smeltkroesprys in 2011, four KykNET Fiestas's in 2012 and five Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards in March 2014.

The author was awarded the Hertzog Prize for Drama for this play and for Oorsee in 2015.

Published in Cape Town by Tafelberg in 2013.

Translations and adaptations

The play was to be filmed by Jaco Bouwer.

Performance history in South Africa

2011: Performed at the Aardklop Festival in 2011, directed by Jaco Bouwer at with Brendan Daniels as Adidas, earning him a Best Actor award. KKNK 2012.
