The acronym, PIT, stands for Professional Intelligent Theatre.

PIT Productions was conceptualised in 1998 by Mareli Minnaar as an independent theatre production house with its main goal being to entertain audiences and develop new and existing talent.

Originally conceived as a bilingual theatre-in-education company, it has regularly performed Afrikaans prescribed works for Grade 11 and Grade 12 pupils in IEB schools countrywide, as well as other works.

Productions include Macbeth, Julius Caesar

It also creates its own theatre work for festivals and other purposes. Nareli Minnaar has written, produced and performed original scripts for the KKNK for 5 consecutive years. For example Zef Sketse, a sketch comedy show written and performed by the key members of PIT Productions, was hugely successful and laid the groundwork for the TV series Blikskottel in 2003 (kykNET). In 2005 SABC 2 commissioned PIT Productions to create the comedy series Kompleks. Mareli was the executive producer as well as lead actress and co-writer of the series.

PIT has since grown and now incorporates a fully-fledged television and postproduction facility and also a sound studio.
