Mr Welsh (fl. mid 19th century) was a Cape Town resident and theatre enthusiast.

Biography

His profession was that of a cooper in Cape Town, where he owned some properties, including a home in Buitekant Street.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

He owned vacant premises in Harrington Street, just above Boom Street, which he let to Sefton Parry for the building of a temporary theatre that opened on 14 September, 1857, as the Harrington Street Theatre.

Welsh himself was a founding member of the Cape Town Theatrical Club (later to become the Cape Town Dramatic Club), which was founded at his residence in Buitekant Street, Cape Town, in 1857 or 1858.
