The original text
A tragic farce set in a middle class household in Poland of the late nineteenth century, the play concerns itself with "respectable" attitudes towards love and sex in the society of that period. Originally published in 1970.

Translated into English by Adam Czerniawski and published - with The Hunger Artist Departs - in the volume Mariage Blanc and Hunger Artist Departs: Two Plays by Marion Boyars Publishers Ltd in 1983.
