Margot Bryant

(1912-1988) Editor, journalist, radio dramatist and manager of a the Ffrangcon-Davies-Vanne Theatre Company.

Biography

Margot Bryant was born in Australia while her Australian parents were visiting their homeland and returned to South Africa at the age of three months.

Contribution to South African Radio and Theatre

At various times worked for the Cape Argus, The Star and was editor and part owner of The South African Tatler. She was widely known as a writer for radio plays and won an SABC national playwriting competition for her production The Man Who Lost. Margot Bryant was a member of successful quiz programmes such as The Last Word with Nicholas Monsarrat, Adele Lezard and Philip Heimann and Full Marks. She wrote the script for the Son et Lumiere production at The Castle in Cape Town, collaborated with Nicholas Monsarrat in the adaptation of The Cruel Sea for radio and adapted Francis Brett Young’s City of Gold for Johannesburg’s 70th birthday celebrations. She researched and wrote Born to Act, a biography of actress Freda Godfrey (Ad Donker, 1979). Also well known as the author of As We Were. South Africa 1939-1941. (Johannesburg: Keartland, 1974).
