Mariechen Naudé

Mariechen Naudé (1919-2006) was an academic, journalist, author, playwright, translator, actress and director.

Biography

Born Mariechen van Rijn, she matriculated from in 1936, then studied at the University of Stellenbosch.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Besides her work as journalist, teacher and a writer of children's literature (usually published by Tafelberg Publishers), she was an actress and director and an active member of the board of the Bloemfonteinse Teatergroep for many years, some of them as chairman.

She became a founding member of the University of the Orange Free State Drama Department, where she worked as a lecturer in speech and drama in the 1960s.

As an actress

Some of her many roles were in productions such as 'n Poppehuis, Die Heks, Ek Onthou vir Mamma, Vername Mense, Agt Vroue, The Holly and the Ivy, The Waltz of the Toreadors, Speelgoed van Glas and Macbeth.

As a playwright

Her plays include: Koerante Verkoop, Met Wie Gaan Jy Sleep, Amanda?, Na Vyftien Jaar, Die Pêrels, ‘n Poppebruilof, Die Reënoogkruik: Spektakels met Somme en Tafels & Zetta se Soektog, Die Trane die Rol oor jou Bokkie….

As translator

Some of her numerous translations are Kop op, Dokter de Vries! (Hans Weigel), Meneer Sampson (Charles Lee), Patricia by Dick van Maasland, My Three Angels as Drie Engeltjies op Duiwelseiland, Twee Voëls met Een Skoot from the original by Philip Levene, Waar is Kameraad Mioussof? by Valentin Katajev, The Whole Truth as Die Houtjie van die Galg, Who Says Murder? as Donkerwerk, Moeite met die Minnaars (Carlo Goldoni's Mirandolina), Tussen Vier Mure (Enclosed Premises by Philip Johnson).

Awards, etc

She twice received the award as best actress of the year for the Bloemfonteinse Teatergroep.
