The original text

This is the printed version of a text by Malan Steyn, a substantial reworking of Malan's earlier play Eet Alles, which had been performed at aardklop and the KKNK, and was the runner up for the 2004 AngloGold Ashanti/Aardklop Smeltkoersprys. The play deals with a group of friends who come together after the death of Johannes Kerkorrel, lead singer of the Gereformeerde Blues Band, in 2002. They reminisce about the Voëlvry Movement [1] of the 1980s.

Johnny is nie dood nie - the film (2016)

Based on the Malan Steyn play, with a script by Christiaan Olwagen, who also directed the film. Largely rewritten, the film uses flashbacks and voiceovers to recreate the rise of the Voëlvry Movement and the rebellion of young Afrikaans students in the buildup to the fall of the National Party and share the friends' confusion of being young and finding their places in the world.

The film featured Rolanda Marais, Albert Pretorius, Ilana Cilliers, Ludwig Binge, Roelof Storm, Charl-Johan Lingenfelder, Martelize Kolver, Roeline Daneel, Mariechen Vosloo, Nini Conradie, Mari Conradi (billed as Marie Conradie), Peach Cronje, De Klerk Oelofse, Cintaine Schutte and Beer Adriaanse.
