Joburg City Theatres
Joburg City Theatres is an overarching managing body for Johannesburg civic theatres.
History and function
In 2014 the City of Johannesburg, as part of its ongoing Institutional Review, set up a single theatre management company, Joburg City Theatres (JCT), to manage the functions and services of the civic theatres under its jusrisdiction, namely the Joburg Theatre, the Roodepoort Theatre and the newly established Soweto Theatre.
From 2015 this management company is also responsible for the annual Johannesburg Arts Alive International Festival.
Joburg Theatre (SOC) Ltd trades as Joburg City Theatres and operates as a Municipal Entity of the City of Joburg.
In 2016, The prolific Makhaola Ndebele (actor, dramatist, producer and director) was appointed as Director of Joburg City Theatres (JCT) giving him a massive responsibility to creatively align Soweto Theatre, Joburg Theatre and Roodepoort Theatre respectively.
Projects
The School Setworks programme
Instituted in 2025, this is an innovative effort to bring South Africa's school curriculum to life through the medium of theatre. Using adaptations of beloved schoolbooks and setworks for staging at the Soweto Theatre, to offer students, educators, and theatre enthusiasts an exciting new way to engage with their learning materials. School Setworks reimagines the traditional classroom experience, blending education with entertainment, and promising an unforgettable journey that inspires both young minds and seasoned theatregoers.
