The funds raised by the early general welfare organization, the Helpmekaar Vereniging, originally formed after the 1914 rebellion, when funds were sought to help the defeated rebels and **. The funds raised were far more than was required, so a fund was established to invest in educational and cultural needs of the Afrikaners.
