Biography
Van Rooyen was born in Salt River, Cape Town, on August 9 1925. His father was a police detective and former Boer War concentration camp internee. He matriculated at St George's Grammar School, known then as St George's Cathedral Grammar School, where he was head prefect. A fellow pupil was Nigel Hawthorne, with whom he shared many a stage. After leaving school, he got a certificate in architecture at the University of Cape Town and worked as an architect before turning to acting and broadcasting full time.

He has appeared on stage in productions of Rain and On the Razzle (CAPAB 1983), As You Like It, Maynardville 1985, Glengarry Glen Ross Baxter Theatre 1985, Balthazar in The Comedy of Errors, Maynardville 1986, Blue Remembered Hills, Baxter Theatre 1986, Romeo and Juliet (Maynardville 1988), Singin' in the Rain (1989), Wuthering Heights, CAPAB 1992, Murder in the Cathedral (1992).
He played the "George" half of the popular George and Rita duo on the Springbok Radio series The Loudspeaker Show.
