Fame is a stage musical based on the 1980 musical film of the same name, with book by Jose Fernandez, music by Steve Margoshes and lyrics by Jacques Levy.

Fame - The Musical is a musical drama about students at a performing arts high school in New York City. The musical is based on the 1980 movie Fame. The story line captures the dreams, struggles, disappointments, joy and romances of the colourful characters as they commit to four years of gruelling artistic and academic work.

In 1988, Fame had its first professional production at the Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami, Florida. Following this, the show ran at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from March 25, through April 29, 1989

Performance history in South Africa

2003: Presented by Cell C and produced by Hazel Feldman in association with Jacobsen Entertainment of Australia in September at the Transnet State Theatre in Pretoria and then at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from December 3, 2003 to January 31, 2004. The production team was predominantly from Australia. These Australians included: director by David Atkins, choreographer Kelley Abbey, assistant Director Jason Coleman and assistant choreographer Leanne Cherny. South Africans included musical director Clifford Cooper and company manager/dance director Jill Somers. The production cast was South African. Starring Mara Louw, Lisa Melman, Dale Cutts, Mike Huff, Carlo McFarlane, Neels Clasen, Shelley Meskin, Keeno-Lee Hector, Relebogile Mabotja, Craig Norris, Natasha Staples and Niki Rowan. The company consists of Celeste Botha, Cobus Gomes, Gemma Harris, Melani Johnson, Michele La Trobe, Jeremiah Lekgetho, Timothy Le Roux, Natasahia Meyer, Lee Piedt, Tiaan Rautenbach, Maude Scheepers, Ashley Searle, Uria Sibanyoni and Luthando Tsodo.

2004: The same production then played at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre for two weeks in February.
