Dictionary of South African English

This dictionary is a project of the Dictionary Unit For South African English (DSAE) in Grahamstown and was established in 1969 (led by William and Jean Branford) to describe English as it has been spoken and written in South Africa from the late 17th century onwards. It records the meanings, spellings, pronunciations and origins of words borrowed from the many languages of South Africa, English words which have acquired particular senses here, and words coined for local phenomena. It therefore contains a significant number of words referring to local cultural practices and performative events and is a valuable aid for researchers and writers. .

First published edition took 25 years to compile and was printed as A Dictionary of South African English on Historical Principles (Oxford University Press, 1996). That edition has been out of print since 2005, but has has since been thoroughly redesigned as an open access online edition, now known simply as Dictionary of South African English. The full text of the dictionary is available cost-free.
