The story first appeared in the author's collection Duiwel-in-die-bos, published by Tafelberg in 1968.

Translations and adaptations

In 2024 the tale was recorded for broadcast by Luisterverhale, as a project undertaken by Katinka Heyns and Sonneblom Ateljees, in partnership with LitNet and sponsored by the Dagbreek Trust. (The Luisterverhale project seeks to have short stories by well known Afrikaans authors are read by professional actors for transmission.)


This audio version was directed by Katinka Heyns and read by Marcel van Heerden and first podcast on 16 May, 2024.

Bos the film

The film

Bos is a film about a deserted post apocalyptic region and is the story of a man who thinks he is the last human alive in the world until he meets a strange woman without a voice. The original film is in Afrikaans and English. Directed by Hendrik Cronje and Mari Molefe van Heerden, with script and editing by Reine Swart. Cast: Among the performers were Simone Neethling, Roderick Jafta, Solomon Cupido, Charlie Bouguenon and Roy van Eck. The theme song, Soen my sag is by Liesl Ahlers. It was shown at Red Brick Road Film Festival in Oklahoma, America where it won several prizes.
