Held for American soldiers in Cape Town in 1944 by a large variety company from the South African Native Military Corps brought together by Lt Ike Brookes. Many of these artists, drawn from a number of existing African variety groups, became part of the cast of Brookes’s 1946 variety show Zonk. (See Kruger, 47; Coplan 150)
