Grahamstown Exhibition of Arts and Crafts

The Grahamstown Exhibition of Arts and Crafts (1898-1899)

Also referred to as the South African Industrial and Arts Exhibition, this was an exhibition held in Grahamstown between 15 December 1898 and 21 January 1899. The main exhibition hall, erected out of wood and iron, was positioned immediately behind the City Hall and led down to Fiddler's Green on which other buildings and pavilions were erected for the duration of the event. The Mayor of Grahamstown, John Syms Willcox, was the president of the exhibition.

Exhibitors in various categories competed for a series of gold, silver and bronze medals, engraved as the South African Industrial and Arts Exhibition Award: Grahamstown.

Music for the exhibition was organised by the violinist and music teacher Percy Ould (1868-1913), with the help of the conductor Theophil Wendt (1874-1951).
