WEIR-SMITH, Charmaine (19**- ). South African stage and television actress and director.

Biography

Training

Holds a B.A Honours in Drama from the University of Natal, Department of Speech and Drama.

Career

She spent the early years of her career with the Natal Playhouse Company, moved to Gauteng in 1996.


Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

She has appeared as Ophelia in Hamlet, Em in The Story of an African Farm.

She directed the cabaret/pantomime Sinderella! (1997), I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change (1999, Civic Theatre Johannesburg), Babes in the Wood (Market Theatre), Freak Country.

Annie: a programme for the production directed by Charmaine Weir-Smith at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre from 13 May 2001.

Full Circle: presented by and at the Hilton College Theatre, directed by Charmaine Weir-Smith, from 1 to 5 February 2006.

Awards

She won the 1995 Vita Award for Best Supporting Actress as Ophelia in Hamlet.

She was nominated for Best Director for a Musical comedy for her direction of Babes in the Wood.

Naledi Theatre Awards, February 2006: Comedy performance, female (play, musical or revue): Charmaine Weir-Smith for her role in Two For the Price of One.
