The Time of the Hyena (1986) is the first play written by Mitzi Booysen.

A play showing the confrontation between two women to explore the impotence of English white liberal thinking in a time of rapid black politicisation and the desperately hostile Afrikaner nationalism of the times. (The Age, Melbourne, Victoria, Wednesday, 14 January , 1987: p.12)[1]

1986: Staged by PACT in the Windybrow Theatre Complex, directed by Tjaart Potgieter, with Pierre Knoesen (Nic le Roux), Elize Cawood (Alta le Roux), Richard van der Westhuizen (Hannes Botha), Grethe Fox (Marion Botha), Laurens Cilliers (Steve de Villiers), Riana Wilkens (Corinne de Villiers), Simon Mosikidi (Phineas), Nomhle Nkonyeni (Edna Muwesi) and Daniel Noceda/Kevin Pearson (Young Boy).
