The Insatiables (2008) is a comedy/thriller conceived and written by Jonathan Rands and Tim Plewman. It is an example of “industrial theatre”, in which the plot is at the service of the overall message of ethics within a corporate or industrial environment. Rands and Plewman play two conniving white-collar fraudsters, once school mates, vying for the same executive position at a reputable corporation. The only other role is that of a psychologist, played at various times by Jennifer Steyn, Adrienne Pearce and, in Grahamstown, by Ameera Patel. The play was taken on tour throughout the country and was staged at various corporate venues, as well as at Pieter Toerien’s Theatre on the Bay, the Montecasino Theatre and, in 2008, the National Arts Festival. It was directed by Clare Stopford and won an award as the best play at the 2008 South African Comedy Awards.
