Her brother is the actor Jan Ellis.

Shirley studied drama at the University of Cape Town.
Career
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
On stage she has appeared in Thina Bantu - We People, Die Van Aardes van Grootoor, The Insect Play, Panics, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Marcus Brutus.
She directed Blougat, Kerrie Karma, The Trojan Women (1984), Onder die Brug, Die Kaalkop Prima Donna, Dikker as Water, Lyf.
Acted in the television series Torings and Konings.
Awards, etc
Winner of the Fleur du Cap Theatre Award for Most Promising Student in 1984.
