The Rhodes University Theatre Complex is a set of venues built for use by the Rhodes University Drama Department.
Not to be confused with what appears to have been an earlier venue used by the department, one usually referred to simply as the Rhodes Theatre.
The Complex
The Rhodes University Theatre Complex was inaugurated in 1966 with a performances of Guy Butler's play Take Root or Die and Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro.
The centre consists of two performance spaces - plus the offices and working spaces of both the Rhodes Drama Department and Rhodes Department of Journalism. Although primarily used for Drama Department productions and student examinations, the complex also hosts workshops and performances by visiting national and international artists (including the touring companies of CAPAB), and is an important venue during the annual National Arts Festival.
