Race

Race is a play by American playwright, film director, screenwriter and author David Mamet (born 1947) [1].

A white man has been accused of raping a black woman and the lawyers defending the case – black and white – have to argue the case to one another, the outside world and themselves.

The play premiered on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on November 16, 2009 in previews, officially on December 6, 2009, closing on August 21, 2010 after 297 performances and 23 previews.

Performance history in South Africa

2011: First performed by The Playhouse Company in The Drama Theatre from 15 – 22 October, as part of their New Stages season. Directed by Clare Mortimer, with design by Sarah Roberts and lighting by Mannie Manim. The cast included Sello Maake ka-Ncube, Michael Richards, Ralph Lawson, .

2012: Performed in South Africa at the 2012 Grahamstown Festival with Michael Richard, Graham Hopkins and Sello Maake Ka-Ncube and Nondumiso Tembe, directed by Clare Mortimer, set and costume designs by Sarah Roberts and lighting by Mannie Manim.

2013: Performed at the Arena Theatre at the South African State Theatre, Pretoria, in 2013, with Hlomla Dandala replacing Sello Maake Ka-Ncube.

2014: Performed at the Edinburgh Festival by The Playhouse Company at Assembly George Square, Edinburgh, 31 July–25 August, directed by Clare Mortimer, now with a new cast consisting of Michael Gritten, Andre Jacobs, Peter Butler and Nondumiso Tembe.
