He apparently founded the Marais Dramagroep ("Marais Drama Group") in the 1950s, and they toured the Western Cape for a couple of decades with only one play, Anker van die Lewe ("Anchor of Life"), written by Marais. Hugely popular, it dramatised a life of evildoing, ending with a deathscene.
