Le Cretin de la Montagne is a French play in five acts and eight tableaux by Eugène Grangé (1810-1887)[] and Lambert Thiboust ()[].

The original text

First performed at the Theâtre de la Gaité, Paris, on 3 June, 1861. Published by Michel Lévy Frères, Paris, in the same year.

Translated and adapted into English as a three-act play called The Idiot of the Mountain by William E. Suter (1811?-1882).

Performance history in South Africa

1876: Performed in English as The Idiot of the Mountain by the Disney Roebuck Company under the temporary management of Charles Wilstone in the Theatre Royal, Cape Town, as part of the season
