Kribendiren Pillay (Kriben) (born 1956). Playwright, teacher, lecturer and academic.

Training

Trained in English and Speech and Drama at the University of Durban-Westville (BA 1978, BA Hons 1981, D.Phil 1999).

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

After short spells as theatre manager at the Window Theatre in East London, and as teacher and a tutor in English at the University of Durban-Westville, joined the staff of the Department of Drama at UDW as lecturer in from 1986 till its closure in 1999. Editor of Asoka Theatre Publications series, and responsible for Finances and Publicity for the Asoka Theatre at UDW. A prolific writer ans speaker and influential thinker, he has attended numerous conferences, and published more than 30 articles, books and plays.

His plays include Looking for Muruga (first performed at the Asoka Theatre 1991, published 1995) and the musical Side by Side Masisizane. He also wrote Coming Home (Musical), F.M. Stereotype and The Town.
