Karol is a dramatic work by Polish dramatist, writer and cartoonist Sławomir Mrożek (1930–2013)[1]

The original text

Written in 1961.

Translations and adaptations

Translated into English as Charlie by Nicholas Bethell and published in Six Plays by Grove Press, Inc., New York in 1967.

Translated into Afrikaans as Karel by Marie van Heerden in 1971.

Made into a Polish TV film in 1993, and premiered on 18 January, 1994.

Performance history in South Africa

1971: The play was to have been performed in Afrikaans as Karel as part of a triple-bill with Wolf, Wolf hoe laat is dit? and Teenspoed by Libertas Theatre Club under the direction of Marie van Heerden, opening 29 October 1971. However, in the absence of any theatre programme or newspaper reports (especially as one would expect in the local Stellenbosch weekly paper Eikestadnuus), it is assumed that the production never materialised.

1981: Performed in Afrikaans as Karel in the Keller Theatre in May 1981 for examination purposes, directed by Lochner de Kock.
