James Conrad

James Conrad (1932-) is a theatre producer/director.

Biography

Born 1932.

Training

Conrad studied singing at the University of Stellenbosch.

Career

In 1955 he was a junior lecturer in singing at the South African College of Music in Cape Town, from where an opera tour took him to London where he then worked for the BBC. During this time he changed from bass-baritone to dramatic tenor and studied in Detmold, Germany from 1960-1963. In 1964 he was contracted to the Kiel opera house and in 1965 to Sadler Wells.

He was the head of NAPAC Opera from 1963 to 1989, producing operas mainly in Natal.
