Jacob Hendrik Pierneef ("J.H.") (1886-1957) [1]. A pre-eminent South African landscape painter whose distinctive works adorn numerous public buildings.

He often did linocuts and woodcuts as book illustrations and for the covers of magazines and theatre programmes - e.g. ***. [Set designs??**] In the 1920s he became the vice chairman of the Afrikaanse Kultuurvereniging en Toneelskool established by Danie Smal. * Designed and painted sets and programmes for inter alia Volksteater (Koning Oidipus, 1938.

He and Erich Mayer did illustrations for the 1920 published version of J.F.W. Grosskopff's play 'n Esau

Awards, etc.

The Pierneefteater in Pretoria was named in his honour.
