AFRIKAANSE KULTUURVERENIGING EN TONEELSKOOL. Theatre-school and cultural organisation founded in the 1920s by Danie Smal in an attempt to raise the level of theatre and co-ordinate cultural activities on the Witwatersrand. Smal became director and principal, while Gustav Preller became the chairman, the painter J.H. Pierneef the vice chairman, A.E. Carinus-Holzhausen the secretary. The rest of the management consisted of Stephanie Faure, B. Minnaar, A.C. Kearney, W. Dreyer, J. Morgan and W.Stolz. (See Binge, 1969; Du Toit, 1988) [JH]
