Iste Gallus Bene Cantat, of Is Het Hy Wel? ("the first cock sings well, or is it really him?") is a one act Dutch farce by an anonymous author.


Original text

Only mentioned by F.C.L. Bosman, 1928, it appears to have been based on a well-known anecdote, cited by Voltaire as a good example of un apropos in his Questions sur L'Encyclopedie, par des amateurs (Tome Second, Volume 40) 1779[1].

Performance history in South Africa

1811: Performed in Dutch by "eenige Liefhebbers" ("some amateurs") in Cape Town on Saturday 24 August, with De Reis van 't Vernuft rondom de Wereld (Anon.). Possibly a youth group studying French, a spin-off of the French work of messrs Agron, Villet and Meurant - who are responsible for ticket sales
