In the 1980s the company also founded a subsidiary imprint called H&R Academica Uitgewers to publish books for school and university use (see also Academica Publishers).

Also referred to as Academica Uitgewers in Afrikaans, Academica Publishers in English or very often simply listed as Academica.

Some publications relevant to South African theatre, media and performance published by Academica include Die Kleiner Kosmos. 'n Versameling Eenbedrywe (a collection of Afrikaans one-act plays, edited by P.P.B. Breytenbach and Temple Hauptfleisch, 1980), Players: A Collection of One-Act Plays (edited by Temple Hauptfleisch and Ted Townsend, 1987), Amateurtoneel in Suid-Afrika (a study of amateur theatre in South Africa by P.J. du Toit, 1988),

Like its parent company, it became part of the Naspers publishing empire in the 1990s.
