Obtained a BA (Hons) in English and Philosophy and a number of educational diplomas.

For several years was the director of the Community Arts Project (CAP), later co-director of Arts and Media Access Centre (AMAC).

In 2007 he started his own consultancy, ZAG Consults.

While with AMAC he edited the monograph Inheriting the flame: new writing on community arts in South Africa. Cape Town: Arts and Media Access Centre (AMAC), 2004.
