Graham Falken
Graham Falken (1952-) is a counsellor, community worker and cultural activist.
Biography
Studied for a BA (Hons) English Literature and Philosophy The Victoria University of Manchester, UK (1974-77), Diploma in the Advanced Study of Community Education Chester College (University of Liverpool), UK (1984-86), Post Graduate Certificate in Education The Victoria University of Manchester, UK (1987-88), Certificate in Counselling Skills South Manchester College, UK (1990), Diploma in Professional Studies (Counselling) Manchester Metropolitan University, UK ( 1991-93), A Certificate in Counselling Supervision Keele University UK (1997) and an M Phil (Economic Policy) Stellenbosch University RSA (2011)
His career in England included Co-ordinator for Community Photography Project (1977), Lecturing and Teaching Part–time (1978-1980) at inter alia Hulme Community Education Centre, South Trafford College, North Trafford College, Tameside College and Moss Side Community Education Centre. From 1980-1987 he was involved as Community Education Worker with the Frank Hatton Children’s Home, and the Abraham Moss Centre.
He then became a full time lecturer on English, General Studies and Pre-Vocational Education at City College Manchester UK (1988 - 1996), before becoming a freelance supervisor to therapists and counselors (1996 - 1998)
His contribution to South African arts and culture
In January 1999 he came to Cape Town where he became the director of the Community Arts Project (CAP, 1999-2003), later co-director of Arts and Media Access Centre (AMAC) (Jan 2004 - Jan 2006) and its director (Feb 2006 -May 2007). While with AMAC he edited the monograph Inheriting the flame: new writing on community arts in South Africa. Cape Town: Arts and Media Access Centre (AMAC), 2004.
In 2007 he founded his own company, ZAG Consults.
His other voluntary work in Cape Town over the years included being a member of the Acquisitions Committee Iziko SANG, the Treasurer Cwesi Community Learning Centre Wynberg, a Board Member of Greatmore Studios Woodstock, the Chairperson for Community Arts and Culture Centres Federation of the Western Cape. Since 2015 he has been the Co-Director of Cape Town Community Television (2015-)
