Dorian Haarhoff (1944-) is an academic, teacher, poet, novelist and playwright writer and dramatist.

Biography

Born in Kimberley, Northern Cape, then part of the Cape Province, he later became a naturalized citizen of Namibia.

He was professor of English at the University of Namibia (1993-1997), and from 2004 onward worked in the creative writing department at the University of Cape Town.

He has long been an active facilitator of storytelling and writing courses and has published widely himself in South Africa and Namibia, his creative works including poetry (Bordering, Aquifers and Dust), children's books (Desert December, Guano Girl and Legs, Bones and Eyes), and plays (see below)

Other writing includes A Writer's Voice: A Workbook for Writers in Africa (Struik Publishers (Pty) Ltd, 1998) and his memoires, called Route 77. A Poememoire (Heart Space Publications, Australia, 2023).

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

He wrote the three plays Orange (1988), Skeleton (1989) and Guerrilla Goatherd (1990) published in Goats, Oranges and Skeletons: A Trilogy of Namibian Independence Plays by Dorian Haarhoff ; edited by Terence Zeeman (2000).

In 1996 he wriote The Missing Namibian, as a Swedish African Museum Project. Unpublished, the work was performed in Sweden and Namibia, 1996.
