("The Good Hope") . Title of the Afrikaans magazine established in 1903. Founded and edited by J.H. H. (Jannie) de Waal and the first number featured a play under the pseudonym ‘Jannie’. Each issue gave prominent coverage to the amateur dramatic societies, including portraits of them in costume. The magazine became a leading feature of the second Taalstryd ("Language Struggle") for Afrikaans and was very influential in the establishment of Afrikaans theatre throughout the country.
