The original text

Written by Bretzner in 1780, and then reworked by the author as a "sung play" (Dutch een zangspel, German Singspiel) in four acts for production by the Berlin company Döbbelinsche Theatertruppe in 1781, with music by Johann André, with the new title of Die Entführung aus dem Serail.

The original play was also the acknowledged source of Mozart's musical work Die Entführung aus dem Serail (1782)
