The original text

Written as a play by Bretzner in 1780, but not performed.

Translations and adaptations

Belmont und Konstanze was reworked by the author to turn it into a "sung play" (Dutch een zangspel, German Singspiel) in four acts, with the new title of Die Entführung aus dem Serail. It was done for production by the Berlin company Döbbelinsche Theatertruppe in 1781, with music by Johann André (1741-1799)[2].

The original play was also the acknowledged source of Mozart's musical work Die Entführung aus dem Serail (1782)
