The Recce
The Recce is a film by Johannes Ferdinand Van Zyl.
Also known simply as Recce. The title is taken from the word used in the South African bush war of the 1970s-1980s to refer to someone sent out "on reconnaissance".
The film
Set in 1981, it tells of a recce, Henk Viljoen, wrongfully declared killed in action behind enemy lines on the Angolan front and abandoned by his superiors. So his life becomes a race against all odds to survive, withs his mental and physical abilities tried to their limits as he navigates his way through the war zone to make his way home.
Written and directed by Johannes Ferdinand Van Zyl with Greg Kriek, Christia Visser, Grant Swanby, Maurice Carpede, Marius Weyers, Albert Maritz, Karlé Briedenhann, Sonni Chidiebere, Elsabé Daneel, Alan Hayward and DeVille Vannik.
Produced for Man Makes a Picture Productions by Minki Fourie and Jac Williams, music by Graham Ward, cinematography by Jacques van Tonder, editing by Jacques le Roux and Ronelle Loots, production design by Pieter Bosman and costume design by Nico Nigrini.
Released in South Africa on 28 September, 2018 and in Japan (as RECCE) on 3 January, 2020.
