The People

A term used rather by activist politicians, writers and academics in the 1970’s-1980’s to refer to the oppressed (black) masses in South Africa. It often occurred in the names of institutions, movements and publications. E.g. as in "People's venues", “The People’s Space”, “South African People’s Plays”, “People’s theatre”, ****
Related to a similar use of popular (i.e. "of the people") and populace (from the Latin populus).
