A short play by William Saroyan (1939). Published by Samuel French.
"The Hungerers is an American fable. The hunger of these hungerers is not a hunger for bread alone, although that hunger is beautiful enough. It is a hunger for immortality. The simple immortality which comes about when human beings rid themselves of all world imposed absurdities and know the foolishness of pride." (Author's note in the Samuel French publication).
First staged in South Africa in 1966 by the Libertas Theatre Club in Stellenbosch, directed by Marie van Heerden, with John Burn Wood (The Writer), Johan Greeff (The Young Capitalist), Elodie Daneel (The Girl), Brenda von Memerty (The Old Woman) and Casper Venter (Death).
